Malta, celebrated as the top country in the ILGA Europe Rainbow Map, stands as a symbol of inclusion and acceptance.
Simultaneously, Malta has been known to repeatedly reject LGBTIQ+ asylum seekers for alleged insufficient evidence, and has one of the most repressive abortion legislations in the world.
Highlighting the hypocritical nature of pinkwashing, the collage appropriating Eugene Delacroix's "Liberty leading the people", features a faceless businessman placed above local queer people from different backgrounds, showing the current state of pride in Malta as seen through the my eyes; dominated by businesses (and partisan politics in the case of EuroPride 2023), largely ignoring LGBTIQ+ issues and realities that need to really need to be in the spotlight.
An untitled outtake from the shoot is displayed separately, putting the spotlight on the soul of the image.
