Starting off as a meditative piece, Silence in Motion is equal parts a reality check, a privilege check and a release of frustrations at the superficiality of pinkwashing and political allyship. The text was brought to life with Chakib Zidi's powerful and emotive movements.
Written while working on my collage "Malta Liberali", the stories shared are excerpts of real stories from queer people who have asked local organisations and activists for help; the words are out of my personal frustration of being legally restricted from offering any support.
The stories are followed by real experiences of local people seeking asylum who were rejected due to ‘insufficient proof’ of their sexual orientation of gender identity; and stories of local queer people from so-called third countries who are trapped in a system designed to exploit.
The piece is unfinished, and future performances will change.
Silence in Motion was performed at 'the wind blows... waves in all directions' and at the Human Rights Conference during EuroPride 2023.
